Morning Commute Soundtrack: Lissie

With the holiday season now in full swing, whether I want it to be or not (and I do!), I’m mostly done my Christmas shopping, the cards have been sent, and the tree and decorations are up. That means celebrations are in order, and on Thursday, while driving into Upper Darby to pick up Meredith – and having foolishly left my iPod at home that morning – 88.5 XPN, Philly’s sole local radio station of good, decent music and serving as an alternative to ClearChannel’s stranglehold, was playing a selection of good, decent music. One song that caught my attention was Lissie, a singer/songwriter I had never heard of before, but I was immediately captivated by her cover of Joe South’s ‘Games People Play’, released on her new EP Covered Up In Flowers, which also includes covers of Metallica (‘Nothing Else Matters’), Lady Gaga (‘Bad Romance’), and Kid Cudi (‘Pursuit Of Happiness’). It’s not a perfect EP, but it was enough to make me explore her music further, and that’s certainly worth celebrating.
